...in the grove of the temple and in the shadow of the citadel I have seen the freest among you wear their freedom as a yoke and a handcuff.

Wanna supersize that?

Hardly surprising in a culture where Happy Meals now include fitness plans to combat encroaching obesity, American undertakers are now offering "super-size" coffins.

Bush's Ras-Putin

Every so often, the Daily Outrage hits a blogger's home run. In this post, Matt documents Bush's fickle feelings toward the Putin regime, from his early denunciation of the treatment of Chechnya to his chummy summit with the leader out at Camp David. I can't do it justice, you've simply got to read it yourself. Full of ironic quotes that will leave you chuckling, if not ready to vomit.

Check out this post at Body and Soul about attacks on girl's schools in Afghanistan, in which Jeanne poses the following question:

How come conservatives have now dropped the issue of the lives of women in Afghanistan, and the only people who are still trying to gain some attention for the issue are feminists?

O Canada

One more reason to head for the border: the gun homicide rate in Canada is the lowest it's been since they started recording it in 1961. And, Hesiod points out, it seems that their gun control laws really could have made it possible...especially considering that their homicide rate has actually increased, although firearm-related deaths have hit an all-time low.

Amen, brother:

He speaks well, he's well-read, but he's an idiot. --Eagles defensive end N.D. Kalu, regarding Rush Limbaugh

No, Rush Limbaugh did not survive the "bovine excrement storm" he launched the other day. And if you thought his stepping down from ESPN wasn't enough, then just wait until you read about his alleged drug habit. Yes, life has gotten a little bit uglier for Rush Limbaugh...and boo f---ing hoo at that.

All of this info--excepting the excrement storm link a la Aurabass--was channeled to us by skippy, who has another vignette of Republican virtue, the Terminator's groping habit, here for your reading pleasure.

Housekeeping desperately needed

Well, I'm a bit behind on posting...and there have been quite a few interesting things in the news. If you're a New York Times reader, as Ashleigh is (and sometimes I am), then you're up on the latest chapter in the saga of Bush cronyism in Iraq. The Cursor is abuzz with the Plame story, as is Open Source Politics (the new home of beloved blogger Cowboy Kahlil), which will be added to the blogroll shortly. (We are honored to be listed there with the likes of Christopher Allbritton, Atrios, Matthew Yglesias, and the indefatigable skippy.) Yes folks, it's time for some housecleaning at the little red cookbook...links must be updated, archives must get listed, and more. I'm going to try to get that out of the way before the weekend is up--am currently getting the edge on these grad school applications, so it looks like there is indeed light at the end of the tunnel. Now if I could only find a job/commune/cave/organic farm at which to spent the coming year...Stay tuned. And if you want to see a fine blogger in action, check out South Knox Bubba's cool presentation of some of his latest "fan mail"...here, and here.

And since you'll be at Bubba's website anyway, you should check out this disturbing page on alleged cruel treatment of puppies at a Missouri pet store. It's one thing, I think, for most of us to read about animal testing centers, or massive industrial chicken coops. But maybe the concept of industrial puppy mills, in which female dogs are bred at every cycle until death while trapped in tiny enclosures, will be enough to shake us out of complacent detachment and into action. Let's write some letters, folks!

Recognizing the power of the erotic within our lives can give us the energy to pursue genuine change within our world, rather than merely settling for a shift of characters in the same weary drama.

We should admit, rather, that power produces knowledge...; that power and knowledge directly imply one another; that there is no power relation without the correlative constitution of a field of knowledge, nor any knowledge that does not presuppose and constitute at the same time power relations.
